Welcome to the Newly Redesigned Ribbons of Red!

July 25th, 2009 written by Renee Swigert + 9 People Left Love

Ribbons of Red Clients

Ribbons of Red began as a part-time venture. It was a fun and exciting creative outlet—something my corporate job lacked. Each client that came in felt like a gift. I couldn’t wait to dive into every project and learn about each new business. It wasn’t long before one client became two, and two clients became three. Before I knew it, I had so much design work that I was forced into a crossroads.

My grandma’s passing (the reason I began Ribbons of Red) again reminded me that life is short and precious. I couldn’t forget what she had taught me her last year in life: to seize the day. Ultimately, with the support of my loved ones, I chose to peruse the life of a small business owner and see where Ribbons of Red would take me. Today, the launching of my new redesign is not only exciting, but monumental for me. I am embarking on a new chapter with my business, and had I not been successful, today would not be possible. Without further ado, I’d like to explain a little bit about the new look and what you can expect from Ribbons of Red in the future.

The Logo

The new logo is by far my favorite part of the redesign, specifically the heart in the center. It formed over dinner one night with my soon-to-be-husband, Ryan. As we ate our pasta, I explained how hard it was to design for myself. I told him I wanted something that represented my grandma, my passion for design, and my company name. Without blinking an eye, he grabbed a used, blue Post-it note and began drawing. He held out his idea proudly with a big smile. “How about this?” he asked. “The heart represents the love you have for your grandma while incorporating part of your company name—the ribbons.” I was in shock. It was so simple and clever. Why hadn’t I thought of that? Or better yet, why hadn’t any of the designers I hired to help me, think of that? It was perfect. I snatched the Post-it note out of his hand like it was a winning lottery ticket and squealed. How lucky am I to not only have a symbol that represents myself and my company so well, but to also have a symbol that was designed by someone I love so much!

The Website + Blog

In the past, I was very caught up in trying to design and write for other designers. This time around, I’ve built my website and blog strictly for my clients. I want them to be able to use the website with ease and read a blog that will help them better their business. Because of this, I’ve made the bold decision to remove all my past blog entries. Why? Because they won’t benefit my clients so I’ve decided to start fresh. Think of it as the first page of a new sketchbook. From here on out, I’m only going to be writing about things that interest my clients and I—whether it’s a topic about good design practice or an inspirational quote that gets us all going on a Monday. Whatever I find inspiring, interesting, or educational will be doodled here.

Please join me in celebrating the new journey I am about to embark on with Ribbons of Red, and feel free to leave some comment love below! Hi Renee,

I love your new site, and I am so glad to hear that you’re doing so well, I accidentally found your blog when I was searching on things about freelance, and thought that you were so honest and had so many good things to talk about. Your posts really helped me realize that some day I will be and can be successful graphic designer. I am so disappointed to hear that you are going to get rid of your old posts because I haven’t read all of them and think that there are so many good topics left to read. I just wish you could keep them a little longer. thank you, i am so happy for you and I absolutely adore your new logo.

    Hi Renee,

Congratulations on your new redesign. But…..I have to agree with Emina..I, too, had just recently found your blog/site (2 days ago!) found soooo much that was beneficial, loved what I was reading and, again, like Emina had not had time to read all your older posts. Please reload them! We are not just what we are today and in the future but what made us in the past….how you got to “here today” and how you will go forward from your past is a great interest and to us who have just found you. Again, congratulations and many good wishes for continued success! Carol

    Hi Renee,

Love the design, I’ve added it to Nicely Done CSS so hopefully more folks can see your work. You really do have an eye for the whitespace and I love the font you use for the top blocks of text. Really nice. Also, I like the visual for the Springdale project in the portfolio, is that site online yet?

    Cheers!

@James – Thanks for adding me to your gallery! The Springdale website is online and located at: http://www.springdale.org/goplay/ . My client has been keeping the site up-to-date since it went live several months ago.
